In Algiers, New Orleans, after the explosion of a ferry transporting the sailors from the USS Nimitz and their families with 543 casualties, the lonely AFT agent Doug Carlin is assigned to investigate the terrorist attack. Without any lead, he is informed by Sheriff Reed about a corpse of a woman that was found one hour before the explosion, but burnt with the same explosive. He is invited by FBI Agent Pryzwarra to join the surveillance team leaded by Jack McCready in the investigations, using a time window and Einstein-Rosen bridge through seven satellites to look back four and half days in time. He discloses the identity of the mysterious dead woman called Claire Kuchever and decides to follow her last moments trying to find the criminal. Along the surveillance, Doug falls in love for Claire and tries to change destiny, saving her life.

You will understand historical fact versus fiction when it comes to figures as diverse as:Jacques Cartier. As early as 1534, he was “surprised to sight Indians, along what he thought was an unexplored Atlantic coastline, waving furs on sticks as an invitation for the Europeans to come down to the beach and trade.”

James Monroe and Robert Livingston . They made the Louisiana Purchase, the greatest real estate deal in history, without approval from then-President Thomas Jefferson (they had no time to tell him). Jefferson, in turn, had no constitutional authority to make the treaty of cession that finalized the purchase. He sent the document to the Senate with the comment, “The less we say about Constitutional difficulties the better.”

Carrie Nation. The savvy temperance advocate hired a publicity manager to arrange media coverage before she invaded and smashed up a saloon. She even sold autographed copies of the axes she used.

Isaac Singer. The sewing machine magnate pioneered now universal business techniques such as installment plan payments and nationwide advertising.

Reading History “Forward”

An additional benefit of this course is that, as they present U.S. history, Professors Guelzo, Gallagher, and Allitt also provide a mini-course on teaching and learning history in general. They convey a variety of highly useful lessons on how to think about history, place it in a proper perspective, and understand it accurately. These include an emphasis on the social and political context in which vital decisions were made and events took place, and an ability to take both the short-term and long-term views of issues.

In his lectures on the Civil War and Reconstruction, Professor Gallagher warns that the fact that we know how history turned out, that we “read history backward,” often distorts our understanding. Repeatedly, he reminds you to “read forward, not backward” to try to understand how people of the times experienced events as they unfolded.

Successes too Often Taken for Granted

Professor Allitt reflects on the aspects of U.S. history that make it unique and noteworthy, and that indicate the degree the nation has lived up to its ideals. He notes that America may fall short of its own high standards, “but compared to the other nations of the world, America was far more impressive for its successes than for its failings.”

Some of these successes, Professor Allitt adds, are so obvious that we often fail to recognize them. The United States has achieved an exceptional degree of political stability and internal civil peace for a very long time. “We’re so familiar with it that it’s easy to forget how rare it is,” Professor Allitt notes.

This is one of the many vital and often overlooked aspects of U.S. history that this course will help you to appreciate. Throughout the nation’s existence, even during the Civil War, democracy has always worked. Elections have always taken place, the losers have always accepted that they have lost and left office, and the military has never tried to overthrow the civilian government.

Perhaps this is a legacy of the most popular and revered American ever, George Washington. At the end of the Revolutionary War, some of Washington’s officers suggested that the Continental Army should take over the country and make him the first King of America.

Washington flatly rejected the offer, resigned his commission, and rode off to his home in Mount Vernon.

The notion that anyone could refuse power in this manner shocked Britain’s King George III. “If this is true,” the king said, “then he is the greatest man of the age.”

Chilly Willy the penguin is one of the Walter Lantz’s most recognized and beloved stars, and seemed to flourish in the late 50s, a period when most people feel the Lantz cartoons were in decline. In 1949, Walter Lantz retired his second biggest star, Andy Panda, leaving only one major character to star in his new cartoons: Woody Woodpecker. In 1953, Lantz wanted a new character, and one of his directors, Paul Smith, began work on a cartoon entitled Chilly Willy. This cartoon features a little penguin, more similar in design to the ones found in 1945’s Sliphorn King of Polaroo than the Chilly Willy we think of today, voiced by Sara Berner. This cartoon set up the general formula of Chilly wanting to find warmth that most future Chilly Willy cartoons would adhere to, and it introduced an early version of the familar Chilly Willy theme song.
Unfortunately, Chilly Willy was not a huge success, but Walter Lantz was set on having a penguin character, and when Tex Avery returned to the studio in 1954, Lantz asked him to make another attempt at getting the character to work. Avery didn’t feel a “little fuzzy wuzzy penguin” would be particularly funny, so he decided to pair Chilly Willy with funny co-stars. The first of these cartoons, I’m Cold (re-titled Some Like It Not by Castle Films) introduces Smedley the dog, Chilly’s long time co-star. Smedley’s most distinct characteristics were his voice and deadpan personality, which had previously been used by Tex Avery for a southern wolf character in a few of his MGM Droopy cartoons. The voice came from Daws Butler, and a similar voice would later be used for Hanna-Barbera’s Huckleberry Hound as well. I’m Cold was a success with audiences, and it was soon followed by another cartoon called The Legend of Rockabye Point (re-titled The Rock-a-Bye Legend by Castle Films). This cartoon featured Chilly Willy and a polar bear (who is NOT Smedley) attempting to steal fish from a ship. Avery’s second Chilly cartoon was nominated for Academy Award, and this pretty much ensured Chilly Willy’s place as a star.
The Legend of Rockabye Point was Tex Avery’s last Chilly Willy cartoon, and his second to last cartoon for Lantz. After Avery’s departure, Alex Lovy, who had directed many of Walter Lantz films in the early 40s, returned to continue the Chilly Willy series. Avery had storyboarded three new Chilly Willy cartoons before leaving, and it is believed that Alex Lovy used some, if not all, of the gags and ideas left behind. In fact, many of the early Alex Lovy cartoons have the feel of Tex Avery cartoons, especially Hot and Cold Penguin and Room and Wrath. Lovy as as Chilly’s only director until 1959 because he would leave the studio less than a year later.
Beginning with 1960’s Fish Hooked, Chilly would be shared by several directors, including Paul Smith, Jack Hannah, and Sid Marcus. It was during the 60s that Sid Marcus directed Half-Baked Alaska, a cult favorite in which Chilly Willy tries to get a job so that he can buy pancakes from Smedley. Chilly Willy cartoons were produced every year until the Lantz studio closed, and as budgets lowered, the character became more articulate and chatty. New characters, such as the Looney Gooney and Maxie the Polar Bear were added to keep the series interesting.

Great Ideas of Philosophy, 2nd Edition

Humanity left childhood and entered the troubled but productive world when it started to criticize its own certainties and weigh the worthiness of its most secure beliefs. Thus began that “Long Debate” on the nature of truth, the scale of real values, the life one should aspire to live, the character of justice, the sources of law, the terms of civic and political life—the good, the better, the best.

The debate continues, and one remains aloof to it at a very heavy price, for “the unexamined life is not worth living.”

This course of 60 lectures gives the student a sure guide and interpreter as the major themes within the Long Debate are presented and considered. The persistent themes are understood as problems:

* The problem of knowledge, arising from concerns as to how or whether we come to know anything, and are justified in our belief that this knowledge is valid and sound
* The problem of conduct, arising from the recognition that our actions, too, require some sort of justification in light of our moral and ethical sensibilities—or lack of them
* The problem of governance, which includes an understanding of sources of law and its binding nature.

The great speculators of history have exhausted themselves on these problems and have bequeathed to us a storehouse of insights, some so utterly persuasive as to have shaped thought itself. In these coherent and beautifully articulated lectures you will hear Plato and Aristotle, the Stoics and Epicureans, the Scholastic philosophers and the leaders of Renaissance thought.

In addition, you will learn about the architects of the Age of Newton and the Enlightenment that followed in its wake—all this, as well as Romanticism and Continental thought, Nietzsche and Darwin, Freud and William James. This course is a veritable banquet of enriching reflection on mental life and the acts of humanity that proceed from it: the plans and purposes, the values and beliefs, the possibilities and vulnerabilities.

Some of What You Will Learn

In these lectures you will:

* Explore three basic philosophical questions: What can I know? How should I behave? Is this tribe or polis able to preserve our knowledge, protect our interests, lead us to a more meaningful life?
* Understand why we should aspire to moral excellence through habitual striving and a devotion to self-perfection, and how we might attain a flourishing form of life.
* Explore the four assessments of what constitutes the good life. These have come and gone over the course of time in many forms.

The titles of the lectures in this course reveal its scope. In every lecture, there is substance that can change your view of the world and its history.

You will see the creation of rational thought. Dr. Daniel N. Robinson addresses in one lecture why such a rich tapestry of thought would begin in ancient Greece and why, weaved together during the lives of three specific men, it would never be equaled.

Most famous was Socrates, the pagan philosopher whom St. Augustine would revere because he was willing to die for truth. Socrates’s student, Plato, wrote so powerfully on almost every issue in philosophy that Alfred North Whitehead later commented that all of Western philosophy was a footnote to Plato. (But British philosopher and mathematician Bertrand Russell described Plato as a “garden-variety” Fascist.)

How We Live Determines Character

Aristotle, Plato’s student, had possibly the most fruitful mind in human history. He laid the foundations for virtually every science, and his treatises on friendship and the good life have never been surpassed. As Dr. Robinson concludes: “Aristotle makes quite clear that our character is shaped by our works. That is, we make ourselves into the sorts of beings we are in virtue of the manner in which we conduct our lives.”

After Greece, the lectures explore the beginnings of Christian philosophy in the work of the Roman Stoics, the exceptional debt of civilization to Roman law and to Islamic scholars who preserved and extended Greek thought while Europe became a backwater in the Dark Ages.

Early in the 17th century, Francis Bacon defends the scientific mode of knowledge. Experience and not speculation is the central source of learning. He observed that “words are but the pictures of matter,” and that to fall in love with words was as mistaken as to “fall in love with a picture.”

Bacon’s program to rely on experience was not embraced by the genius René Descartes, inventor of analytic geometry, whose division of the mind and the body has been a rupture in Western philosophy ever since. Professor Robinson describes one reply to Descartes’ proof of his own existence:

“The Scottish ‘commonsense’ philosopher Thomas Reid is kidding around a bit when he gets to Descartes’ famous ‘Cogito, ergo sum.’ Descartes would not accept his own existence until he could come up with a very good rational argument that culminates in a conclusion that he exists. Reid says a man who disbelieves his own existence is no more fit to be reasoned with than one who thinks he’s made of glass.”

Ideas Engender Democracy

The course carefully examines the ideas of Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and Reid, and the impact of those ideas on governments—particularly on the new democracy in America.

The Enlightenment program of scientific knowledge undermined the possibility of human freedom because a world completely determined by material causes made freedom an illusion. The course examines the ongoing debate, exemplified by the conflict between Hume and Kant, over whether there can be any truly moral acts taken in a causally determined world.

And the course shows how this debate is amplified in the German Romantic thought of Goethe and Schiller, in which freedom becomes the defining feature of human being. In Nietzsche, the lectures show how the argument for freedom takes on a full, dark, and possibly more honest aspect.

The course also examines the collision between the inherently social understanding of meaning created by Wittgenstein and the vastly different estimation of human thought created by the code-breaking genius Alan Turing—and the subtle reply to him from American philosopher John Searle.

Further lectures, unique to the second edition of this course, examine the concept of reality itself:

* Do ideas of natural law and moral reality exist in the larger universe, independent of us or our sentiments?
* How should moral problems affect medical and ethical decisions?
* Is war ever justified?

You will see how natural law theory has evolved through the Enlightenment and the writings of Jeremy Bentham and John Austin, among others. Theories of a “just” war, beginning with St. Augustine and including St. Thomas Aquinas and Francisco Suarez, set forth the principles by which engaging in and conducting war are justified.

Finally, after exploring the concepts of aesthetics and beauty, we take a concluding look at history’s greatest theological debates about the existence of God.

R2 features enhanced support of Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) computer architectures along with new User-Mode Scheduling (UMS) technology. UMS enables custom thread-level scheduling within your own application. For certain categories of computing scenarios, this avoids the overhead of thread kernel transitions and context switching.

Why is this important for Application Developers? New commodity computer systems will soon be available that leverage many-core architectures. Application Developers will want to ensure that their applications perform well on this new generation of high-performance commodity systems. Developers will appreciate that the new C++ Concurrency Runtime along with the .NET Parallel Extensions encapsulate much "many-core" programming complexity while Visual Studio 2010 includes new tools for debugging and profiling parallel computing applications.
* Designed for Efficiency Designed for Efficiency The Windows operating system features built-in infrastructure services (Service Control Manager and Task Scheduler) that help manage background processes. Windows takes advantage of the built-in services to provide system management, device management, and system maintenance functionality.

Significant improvements have been made to this infrastructure for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Developers can use these improvements to develop Windows services that are efficient and that contribute to overall system performance and security.

For example, a service can register to be started or stopped when a trigger event occurs. This eliminates the need for services to start when the system starts, or for services to poll or actively wait for an event; a service can start when it is needed, instead of starting automatically whether or not there is work to do.
* Server Core .NET Application Server Server Core .NET Application Server Server Core is a minimal installation option for Windows Server and is available with the following Windows Server editions:

– Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition
– Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition

Server Core system deployments provide significant benefits including:
– Reduced Server Attack Surface

Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core introduces support for subsets of the 2.0/3.0/3.5 .NET Framework in addition to a number of other new optional features and roles. These additions extend the role of Server Core system deployments to not only enterprise network service hosting but also to application hosting. The Framework additions make it possible to host The Web Platform including ASP.NET web applications. Windows PowerShell is available along with the integrated IIS Provider. Application Developers should ensure their new and existing Enterprise Solutions integrate well with the Server Core deployment environment.
* The Extensible Web Platform The Extensible Web Platform The Windows Server 2008 R2 Web Server (Internet Information Services, IIS 7.5) is built with a completely modular architecture on top of rich extensibility APIs. This enables developers to easily add, remove, and even replace built-in IIS components with hand-crafted ones specifically suited for any given Web site. It is now easy to plug code deep into the IIS core pipeline and extend IIS in ways that were previously impossible.

In addition to exceptional modularity and extensibility, the Web Platform enables a myriad of Web Development scenarios including ASP.NET, PHP, FastCGI, Web Services, improved FTP services, as well as integrated media solution scenarios. New Modules, Extensions, and Utilities are published regularly online. For example, the new Web Platform Installer (WPI) utility enables seamless deployment and configuration of the Microsoft Web Platform, including IIS, SQL Server Express, .NET Framework and Visual Web Developer, as well as custom extensions and reusable application-templates from the online Web Gallery. * Extreme Web Services Extreme Web Services The WS-* web services industry standard protocols are widely accompanied by managed-code end-point implementations. With the Windows Web Services API (WWSAPI), you can now connect your C/C++ client applications with web services as well as implement C/C++ web services. WWSAPI, new with Windows 7 (client) and Windows Server 2008 R2 (server), is an implementation of the WS-* family of protocols for SOAP based web services. It enables several solution scenarios including:

1. The ability to build web services in native C/C++ code on both Windows client and server.
2. Achieve interoperability with web services implemented using Windows Communication Foundation, ASP.NET XML Web Services, and even services implemented using non-Microsoft implementations of WS-* protocols.
3. The ability to build web services with minimal service startup time and minimal working-set dependencies.
4. The ability to use web services in resource-constrained deployment environments.
5. Avoid costly managed-native inter-op scenarios and achieve high performance web service end-point implementations.
* The Extensible File Classification Infrastructure The Extensible File Classification Infrastructure Managing storage is no longer simply about volume and availability; organizations need to manage their data more effectively and more efficiently. Only by gaining insight into their data can companies reduce the cost of storing, maintaining, and managing data. Only by enforcing company policies and knowing how storage is utilized can administrators efficiently use their storage and mitigate the risks of data leakage. The next frontier for administrators is to be able to manage data based on business value. Windows Server® 2008 R2 File Classification Infrastructure (FCI), a built-in solution for file classification, enables manual processes to be automated with predefined policies based on the data's business value.

FCI also provides an extensible API upon which developers can build end-to-end solutions that enable organizations to perform advanced classification and data management, thus enabling Microsoft partners to deliver rich classification solutions.

FCI's out-of-the-box functionality includes the ability to define classification properties, automatically classify files based on location and content, apply file management tasks such as file expiration and custom commands based on classification, and produce reports that show the distribution of a classification property on the file server.

* Windows PowerShell is Powerful Automation! Windows PowerShell is Powerful Automation! Windows PowerShell is a Windows command-line shell designed for ease-of-use not only by system administrators but also for application and system developers. The shell includes an interactive prompt and a scripting environment that can be used independently or in combination. PowerShell V2 is available by default with both R2 and Windows 7 and, via an optional update, previous versions of Windows.

For Developers specifically, Windows PowerShell in combination with the Windows Management Infrastructure (WinRM, WS-Management, WMI) provides a great way to automate server hosted solutions. For example, if you implement all your administration logic via PowerShell, then layer the MMC GUI over the top (i.e. MMC calls PowerShell to get the work done) – you will have given your Enterprise customers the absolute best of all worlds; GUIs, scripting, and delegated, remote automation.

Version 2 of Windows Powershell introduces an array of new features including remote sessions, an integrated script environment, debugging tools, and much more.
* VHD and Hyper-V APIs Enable Creative New Solutions VHD and Hyper-V APIs Enable Creative New Solutions Although VHD files are closely associated with virtualization products like Hyper-V, the VHD file format is actually a stand-alone technology useful beyond just virtualization solution scenarios. With Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7, VHD files attain “volume” status thus enabling scenarios such as “mount a VHD drive”, “boot to a VHD”, or “create static, dynamic, or child VHDs”. Developers may also integrate such VHD usage scenarios within their applications using new VHD API’s.

Hyper-V exposes WMI APIs to create, manage, monitor, and configure virtual resources. Developers can use Hyper-V WMI APIs in a variety of ways including:

1. By management software vendors who write tools to manage virtualization environments.
2. By enterprise developers who may seek to integrate heterogeneous virtualization technologies within line-of-business solutions.
3. By developers who want to automate virtualization in test or development environments through scripts or custom utilities.
